Race and Religion: A Review of the Book “The Cross and the Lynching Tree” by James H. Cone

#Race and Religion: Join us for this enlightening discussion involving Race, Christianity, Catholicism, and Judaism. The Cross and the Lynching Tree examines two of the most powerful symbols throughout our nation’s history, in the African American Communities for centuries. This workshop is designed to examine the intersection between race and religion by illustrating how the church has stood idly by and watched hate and evil behavior flourish in communities across this nation without dissent. This workshop explores the hypocrisy and oxymoronic contradictions associated with upholding whiteness and supremacy while simultaneously exalting yourself as a member of a religious faith.

*Upon completion of this workshop, students will be able to:

• Compare and contrast the “New RRO Definition of Racism” vs Websters
• Analyze the art of creating a Liberation Theology that sits in the intersection of being Black and practicing Christianity.
• Review the social constructs of “Whiteness”
• Evaluate how Christians have praised the gospel and simultaneously upheld white supremacy for more than four centuries.
• Gain a deeper understanding of how lynching and religious practices have historically been aligned
• Discuss the mental gymnastics to remain calm and sane while living under the systemic effects of Jim Crow
• Explain the difference between the “terror by night” in the South and the War on Terror?
• Propose practical solutions for dismantling systemic racism and improving race relations.
